End of Term - For Some!

It is the end of term for most of the horses.   But of course, it is never the end of term for the yard team as there are always jobs to be done.  Recently, James has been busy preparing the paddocks here at home for the summer grazing.  After one of the wettest winters on record, our horses will be looking forward to their summer holidays out at grass.  We will still have some runners over the summer months with those horses that need better going.

Yard News

We have another two new horses now in the yard.  Jo Coko is in the same ownership as Big Zouk while Small Town Kid is for sale.

We were lucky to secure the five-year-old Small Town Kid at the recently re-instated Goresbridge Sales after he had won his Point-to-Point at Ballyragget on only his second run after coming third at Kirkistown.  By Getaway who is such a successful NH sire, he comes from a strong Dam line and reminds us very much of Lord Wishes.   He is for sale.

Jo Coko was acquired at Tattersalls Cheltenham Festival sale in March 2024 by Bobby O'Ryan.  He is an attractive bay gelding who won his only Point-to-Point in February 2024 at Lisronagh in County Tipperary.

One of our stable favourites, Juge Et Parti has now been retired.   He was a pleasure to train winning over both hurdles and fences.  He was originally with Christian Williams who is so much in everyone’s thoughts at the moment as his daughter fights Leukaemia.  He then went to Nigel Twiston-Davies followed by Archie Watson and then we acquired him at the Goffs sales in 2021.  An elegant grey, he was remarkably consistent except when in the grip of the handicapper and we wish him a long and happy retirement.

Leah Barnfather started coming to us at weekends as a schoolgirl and is now a full-time work rider.  She was very successful at pony racing with Wilsarben1 who was not straightforward, and she showed great courage.   Leah is currently at the British Racing School in Newmarket where she is doing really well.  We will look forward to seeing her back in the yard and noting the changes!

We currently have Fenna Van Ginkel from the Netherlands in the yard on five weeks’ work experience and she was excited to have her first gallop on a racehorse as you can see below.  She also came to Corbridge to watch Chloe and took the photographs.

Chloe McHattie and Ask Cory had another brilliant run at Corbridge on Saturday 20th April coming second in a very competitive Ladies Open.  Her form now reads 12112 which is impressive and Rachael Blackmore’s recommendation of Cory as a suitable Point-to-Pointer has certainly turned out to be true!

Leitrim Chief ran an encouraging race at Hexham on Monday 22nd April in the 2-mile Handicap Chase.  He jumped very well but was hampered by a faller two out and so this was a good result  in the circumstances.   He needs further but opportunities are limited over a longer distance.

Congratulations to Patrick Wadge in winning the Conditional Jockeys Championship and flying the flag for Scottish racing.

We would like to draw your attention to Clare Brownlow, a very talented artist who uses pheasant feathers for her paintings of animals and wildlife.    She has a studio at The Hirsel in Coldstream and is keen to do more work with horses.   So, an excellent choice for your next special present!  Please click below to take you to her very impressive website.
