James Ewart comes from a traditional family farming background. James rode in Point to Points and Hunter Chases from the age of 16. His father Neil Ewart was a permit holder and has bred and trained Point to Pointers and winners under rules.
James gained work experience with National Hunt Trainers; Jonjo O’Neil, Nicky Henderson, John Leadbetter and Ferdy Murphy.
James left The Royal Agricultural College and was Amateur Jockey/Pupil Assistant Trainer to Ferdy Murphy for four years.
During his time with Ferdy, James spent a summer in France with French Bloodstock agent Guy Petit; here James gained valuable experience and contacts - purchasing French bloodstock, sourcing horses such as Dark Ben and My Way De Solzen.
James returned to France to become Assistant Trainer/Amateur Jockey to Guillaume Macaire (Champion French Jumps Trainer). During his time in France he was given some top rides, winning 3 times at Auteuil; France's most prestigious racecourse, winning the 100th Prix De France Champion Amateur Chase in 2000 whilst learning the French training methods.
His final Assistant Trainer role came joining his father back at The Craig, Langholm, Scotland before taking out his own training license in 2004.
James Ewart Racing Ltd was founded in 2004, continuing to act as agents initially; buying and selling French horses to UK trainers and owners whilst building up the training side of the business.
James Ewart is passionate and very ambitious about his horses and the job he does with a yard that now boasts fantastic Facilities, a committed and experienced Team, and quality racehorses with proven results.
James continues to drive forward these results and continually works at improving the quality of horses he has to train and the methods he uses to trains them with.
James's personal ambition is to win as many races as possible for his owners, and the race that he would most like to win is the Queen Mother Champion Chase at Cheltenham (but any one at the festival would do of course!)
